So, I have found lately that the most inspiring thing I can find, is a good conversation with another writer. Or even better another group of writers. In a large group of writers, someone will invariably ask "how do you get past writer's block?" A moment passes when conversation stops and everyone takes a deep breath. No one really has an answer for that question. We all struggle with writer's block. Yet, someone will offer a timid suggestion, something that worked a time or two. Someone else will agree, and maybe expand on it a bit. A third person will suggest something similar, and the first will reply. The one who first asked the question will ask another, seeking clarification. Then yet another person will offer their own "two cents" and you sit back, letting the answers wash over you. You take a moment more, hearing all the ideas, remembering the things you've tried. Some have worked, some have failed, yet all were worth the attempt; so you suggest something out of the box. It may have crashed for you, burning what few ideas you had, but perhaps it will soar for someone else. Then you take one suggestion, mesh it with another, add a dash from a third idea and a spark of your own creativity, and you go home and try to fight your way out of your own writer's block. The suggestion itself may not be what pushes you clear of what drags you down. Perhaps it was merely conversing with a group who all share a passion for writing, a love of words, and a desire not to be held back.
So, in light of all this, and my desire to fight my way past my own inertia, I will ask the question. How do YOU get past writer's block?
