National Novel Writing Month
www.nanowrimo.org/
I have often kicked around the idea of participating in NaNoWriMo, but I've never done it. Forcing myself to churn things out like it was a job seems really hard. The point isn't to have a perfect, publishable novel at the end though. (At least, that wouldn't be the point for ME.) Going through the process is the important/educational part! Anyone thinking about this?

I think it's just to have a rough draft of 50,000 words or more. I'll do it if you do

I did it last year, though I was guilty of rebellion -- started mid-month with something I'd already been working on.
What I liked about it was that you just must dismiss the editor.
If I couldn't think of a word, I'd put in several close ones (correct / accurate / precise / whatever) and go onwards.
I used strikethrough rather than rewrite (as I recall you're encouraged to do this and I really liked it as a technique).
It's expending energy, yeah, but in the good way, not like a chore.
I also found it quite stressful to do things so imperfectly. That was good excercise too.
So, yes I plan to participate again this year. Kinda looking forward to it, actually ;D

I signed up on their site, but they're not doing much yet. It is in November, and they have forums and 3D/IRL groups etc... I have no idea if I'll be able to do this, I can barely eek out a shower three times a week with two wee ones.

I am getting better about that, mostly because if I don't take the time to shower, I find it that much harder to take the time to clean my house. Also, I find I get depressed. There are other things that can lead to depression, but that one seems to be a big trigger. I will sign up as well, and maybe with a group of us doing this we can encourage and help each other! Best of luck all!

You do an amazing job I like the novel form better than short story when I have distractions (though two lil kiddos is extreme distraction ) because it's so much easier to zone in to the other world of a novel. For me...

I was telling Lurch (another Internet alias for one of my good friends, I'm going to need a 'dramatis personae' page in lieu of a signature) and Husband that we seem to have gathered up all the gaming and sci-fi nerds from SOoS. In fact I'm sure we left some behind, so we should make a point to periodically bump the link. Actually, it could just go in our signature too...

I've signed up, and posted an introduction in the 'Newbies' forum. I used PaperGrace for my name, and even kept this picture, so I should be easy to find. They have a 'writing buddies' tool there on the site if we want to keep tabs on each other there.
PaperGrace = PaperGrace Freedom the Veteran Readilygrey Scribbliz
and was it Dear Still who posted about it in SOoS?
I hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew! I'm glad that there will be people I can participate with there/here, with whom I am 'out' in SOoS! You'll understand that extra challenge, and the guilt I'll have to fight down spending time writing instead of working on issues at home.
I assume that at some point we'll have members here who do not know anything about where we know each other from. Perhaps friends we meet at NaNo, or 3D friends, I hope I'm being sufficiently vague in my comments so that people will feel comfortable sharing this place with others.

Sometimes the only thing that kept me sane when my children were very small was having scheduled time to write. It made me feel like I still had a self/brain again I go in the bedroom to write while the kids bond with daddy. I know not everyone has that option, but if there's a way to schedule alone time it recharges you and makes you able to have more to give the kids when you come back.

As I was cruising the NaNoWriMo site today I found links to this book on smashwords: NaNo for the New and the Insane by Lazette Gifford. It is a guide to preparing for NaNoWriMo, and it is free to download, in a massive variety of formats.

I haven't read it yet, but it is saved to my desktop.

I haven't read it yet, but it is saved to my desktop. Thanks for posting this! I will take a look at it soon. I've finished the bulk of my summer classes and have just a few assignments left, but I'm getting burnt out on schoolwork and it's taking me longer. I need a vacation

Adding a poll didn't bump the thread to the latest threads list. Hmmm. Neither did voting in it. Learning my way around.

Do you have to officially sign up for it? Huh, I just realized I don't know how it works other than "write a whole bunch, don't edit it yet."
