Looking at the bank robber book, and a map, I realize that I have my characters crossing two states on horseback. Not Kansas, either, they're headed south through Colorado and, in my original vision, through New Mexico as well, to a spot very near the Mexican border. Now I'm tempted to make their destination Santa Fe. There are pictures of Santa Fe from that era, I like it there, it would give me an excuse for going there for research, and, for personal reasons it would now be much harder to research the original area. Mr. L'Amour has his characters wandering thousands of miles in the space of a few hundred pages, AND he insists that he has personally visited each and every spot he describes -- says that if he says they stopped by a spring, there's really a spring there. This can't be this hard. I don't have to describe every hoofstep. All I have to do is get a handle on how long it would take for horses to do the trip. Which is certainly possible. Do I stick with my vision? Do I make my life simpler and head them to Santa Fe? A lot of research still needs to be done. Of course, this is an excuse to not write.

freedom, maybe start writing it, and see where they take you??? does santa fe feel right, or forced??? is your original location better suited? how much of the research can you do online?

This is hard! On one hand you don't want to sacrifice your vision because of your ex, on the other you don't want to look at your story and see your ex crawling all over the pages. If it was me I would go to Sante Fe just because I miss it (I spent many years in Los Alamos and it was the city we went to when we needed a city ). But I can see the argument for both ideas. If you do go to Sante Fe please visit the Jackalope open air market for me (not sure if that's really what it's called). I have so many fond memories of shopping there as a kid ;D ;D ;D
